Tennessee’s Cracks Show in Loss to Oklahoma | Playoff Hopes Fade

The Tennessee Volunteers’ dream of returning to the College Football Playoff took a serious hit after a 33–27 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners. Despite flashes of offensive brilliance, the Vols’ weaknesses were exposed in a game that slipped away late.

Quarterback Joey Aguilar delivered a big passing performance — 393 yards and three touchdowns — but costly turnovers and a lack of balance on offense proved fatal. Tennessee managed just 63 rushing yards on 35 carries, leaving the offense one-dimensional and vulnerable to Oklahoma’s pass rush.

Defensively, the Vols struggled to contain the Sooners’ big plays, surrendering over 30 points for the first time in weeks. Missed tackles and inconsistent coverage turned key moments into game-changers for Oklahoma, including a critical strip-sack fumble return for a touchdown.

Head coach Josh Heupel now faces tough questions about consistency and execution. Tennessee’s record drops to 6–3, effectively ending their realistic Playoff hopes and putting pressure on the program to regroup for a strong finish and bowl positioning.

Despite the setback, there are positives — the Vols’ talent pipeline remains strong, and Aguilar continues to show promise under center. However, to compete with elite programs, Tennessee will need to find answers in the trenches and establish a more reliable ground game.
